July show at Roam the artists July

An invitation to anyone interested in attending 'Meet the Artists' at Roam Gallery, Sat. July 16th 6-10pm, 555 W. 12th Ave, Vancouver. City Square Shopping Centre.

Jennifer has called artists to submit work for the July show, called 'Canuck and I',inspired by the infamous Vancouver crow Canuck and his friend Shawn.

I reserched to discover some of the behaviors which crows may have; stuff unrelated to the more sinister side of crows which most people associate. I discovered that people who feed crows regularly may be gifted by the crow. The bird will bring small trinkets to this person as a way of gifting them.

I found this rather delightful. I was used to tendencies of crows to be more like what I viewed as a child in the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds'. That movie was enough to freak anyone out.

I choose to submit an abstract piece titled 'Crow Gifting'. The colors and movement of the composition are playful, less menacing than people's impression of crows. I added found objects to the work, a ribbon with a silver medallion, a small gold key and an old cork filled pop bottle cap. These bits of found items represented the types of small items a crow may have brought to it's human friend.

It was a joy to create a painting from a themed reference point as opposed to how my abstract work mostly evolves, simply from within.

A long time coming....

Most people will recognize the busy-ness of life. You lack in one area only because you've been evolving and focusing on other areas of your life/art practice/family.

Seems this is true for where I've been. Critically deliquent on my blog pages but steering efforts in other areas along the way. I truly believe maintaining one's blog is a useful tool for clearing one's mind and sharing with an audience.

As of my last blog I have created some exciting new work I am pleased with, I have connected with a pop-up gallery in Vancouver called Roam Gallery. I plan on submitting my realism to another gallery on the Sunshine Coast, and plan to apply to show my work to Amelia Douglas Gallery at Douglas College in New Westminster.

So all this means my photos, CV, Artist Statements must be up to date. Varnishing many new works after photodocumenting them.

I have updated my information on this website, posting prices on my abstract work etc. I've created new small works for the Surrey Art Gallery gift shop, yet to deliver these. I've recently finished a good book on Joan Mitchell, Abstract painter from the U.S. who lived a good part of her life in Paris. The second time I've read it, which I never read a book twice.

In the meantime working many hours at my 'other job', the one that pays my studio rent and materials.

I strive this year to make serious contacts with galleries or venues to showcase my work, leading to sales of my work. Often there are far more artists doing the same then there are venues able to accomodate them. The world is full of artists, how does one stand out from the millions. Grace, style and contacts I suppose. Here's to the next important leg of my art-making venture...reaching out now as I am ready and my work is ready!
